Iran might help stop Yemen war : UN Experts
UN’s new report states that Tehran is arming Yemen’s Houthi Shiite rebels. Weapons such as ballistic missiles and drones are being provided. Experts at UN also stated that Iran might help stop Yemen War. UN is expecting Iran to play a constructive role in ending the war.
This long-running rumour of the possibility of Iran’s intervention was raised recently in the Security Council. This is evident in the country’s attempt to broker a cease-fire. Although unsuccessful, it was called for the holy month of Ramadan along with other European nations.
Iran’s influence has reached far beyond its own borders in the recent years. They have sponsored thousands of Shiite militia across Iraq, Syria and Lebanon. As the United States of America shall now reimpose the previously lifted sanctions on Iran, the country’s currency has been in freefall. This has given rise to fears of long-term economic suffering and civil unrest.
The Yemen conflict follows the Houthi takeover of the capital of Sanaa in 2014. This routed the internationally recognized government. A Saudi-led coalition allied with the government has been fighting the Houthis since 2015. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was the architect of the coalition intervention. Abu Dhabi’s powerful Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyans and Salman view the Houthis as direct proxies of an Iran emboldened its battlefield successes in Iraq and Syria.
Iran denies supplying any weapons to the Houthis. Iran might help stop Yemen war. But the UN and Western nations say Iran has supplied the Houthis with weapons. These range from assault rifles to the ballistic missiles they have fired deep into Saudi Arabia.
The experts said their inspection of the debris also turned up power converters produced a Japanese company and Cyrillic markings on components, suggesting a possible Russian link.
